The Umbwe route is the most spectacular and direct way to reach Uhuru peak. It is considered to be very difficult and is the most challenging way up to Mountain Kilimanjaro. Umbwe does not provide the necessary stages for attitude acclimatization due to quick ascent. It can be done from 5 + days but best done in 6 or 7 days. The route should only be attempted by those who are very strong hikers and are confident in their ability to acclimatize.

Itinerary

Day 1–2

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp, then trek to Barranco Camp through rainforest and ridges.

Day 3

Climb Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp with panoramic views.

Day 4

Ascend to Barafu Camp for summit preparation.

Day 5–6

Midnight summit to Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp, then hike to Mweka Gate and return to hotel.

Day 0-1

Arrival & Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Camp

Day 0 – Arrival

Pickup from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Arusha.
Trek briefing and equipment check by your guide.
Accommodation: The Charity Hotel (Standard).

Day 1 – Trek Start

After breakfast, transfer to Umbwe Gate (1,800 m).
Begin through banana plantations and lush rainforest, following a forestry track that narrows into a steep ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe Rivers.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner included

Day 2-3

Umbwe Camp → Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Day 2 – Umbwe to Barranco Camp

Terrain shifts from dense forest to rocky slopes and moss-covered trees.
Enjoy views of Kilimanjaro before descending slightly into Barranco Valley.

Day 3 – Barranco to Karanga Camp

Steep climb up grassy slopes with panoramic views.
Afternoon at leisure for acclimatization or short explorations.

Day 4

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Karanga to Barafu Camp

Short but challenging ascent through alpine desert.
Strong winds possible; scenic views of Mawenzi Peak.
Early dinner and rest before summit night.

Day 5

Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate

Day 5 – Summit Day

Midnight wake-up, light tea/snacks.
Steep climb on scree to Stella Point (5,756 m) for sunrise.
Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), Africa’s highest point.
Descend to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Hiking Time: ~14 hrs

Day 6 – Final Descent

Trek through montane forest to Mweka Gate (~3 hrs).
Receive summit certificates, transfer to hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and celebration.
