Itinerary

Day 1–2

Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp through rainforest, then ascend past Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp with mountain views.

Day 3

Steep climb to Mawenzi Tarn Hut beneath dramatic spires, afternoon acclimatization or exploration.

Day 4–5

Cross saddle to Kibo Hut, midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak, descend to Horombo Hut.

Day 6

Trek via Mandara Hut through rainforest to Marangu Gate, collect certificates, transfer to hotel.
Day 0-1

Arrival + Day 1 – Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp

Arrival (Day 0):
Pickup at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Your guide will brief you on the trek, check your equipment, and ensure you’re fully prepared. Overnight at The Charity Hotel.

Day 1:
After breakfast, drive to Nalemoru Gate near the Kenyan border. Begin your trek with a gradual ascent through lush rainforest. Wildlife such as zebras, elephants, buffalos, and monkeys may be spotted.

Days 2–3

Simba Camp to Kikelelwa Camp, then to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Day 2:
Continue towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3,450 m) and arriving at Kikelelwa Cave (3,600 m). Expansive views reveal the vastness of Kilimanjaro. Water is sourced from a nearby stream.

Day 3:
A short but steep climb up grassy slopes leads to incredible panoramic views and the remote wilderness of Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330 m), nestled beneath towering spires. The afternoon is free for rest or short acclimatization hikes.

Day 4–5

Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo Hut, Summit to Horombo Hut

Day 4:
Cross the lunar-like desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut. Rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Hiking Time: ~5 hours

Day 5:
Begin the final ascent at midnight. Climb slowly to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) for sunrise over Mawenzi, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest and hot lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,700 m).

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Hiking Time: ~15 hours

Day 6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend through heath and moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700 m) for lunch, then continue through tropical rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates and transfer to your hotel in Moshi for a warm shower and celebration.
